Darting up the steps to the station, the only thing on DCI Aikman’s lips was the stabbing and the leftover grease from his hearty breakfast of mine, the warnings of women who held grudges were long since dismissed. The cracked concrete beneath our soles was tacky to the touch, sticking to the balls of our feet. An unstoppable shudder rose from the depths of my core at the familiar sight of the sticky tarmac.

“I’m planning on dropping in and paying another fleeting visit to Marston.” I caught up with DCI Aikman, who was surprisingly agile for such a hefty bloke. “The sooner, the better. This morning, ideally. I want to attempt to catch him before he gets swept up in his world of bartering and bank notes.”

“Why not pull him into CID? Have Marston where I can keep an eye on him and his slimy hands too,” DCI Aikman stopped in his tracks. “Unless you're hankering for another journey in my automobile, in which case I’m not letting these keys out of my sight. She’s just gotten a respray, and as long as I’m breathing, your mitts are staying firmly away from her. Your history of joyriding the beauty is the stuff of nightmares.” The criticism was rich coming from him. The frantic blasts of DCI Aikman’s horn had been ingrained into my muscle memory and the memory of half the population of Greenock too.

“Custom House is only down the road, Chief. I think I’ll manage without.”

“I know what you kids of today are like, Donny boy. Ruddy useless.” DCI Aikman insulted generations when there was something bigger on his mind, the laziest insult he could muster. Dragging up Marston may have had something to do with his fraying temper. “Couldn’t win a cross country between the lot of you.”

I rolled my eyes. “Pulling Marston in would entail us making an appointment with Holly Kaye, and who knows when she’d be able to finally spare us an hour of his precious time? I imagine his days under her influence are chock-a-block already. I won’t wait that long for him to squeeze me in.”

“What makes you so sure they won’t turn you away?” DCI Aikman’s spittle landed on the hot-to-the-touch metal railing. “Request you come back at a later date?”

“Marston did say we were free to question him about the murder of Ross Peake, so long as we did it in a calmer manner than we displayed previously. After learning from the family themselves that he and Ross had physical altercations in the early days, despite Marstons repeated exaggerations that he loved his golden employee and that he failed to mention these busts ups, I’m sure Marston will want to explain himself right away. Straighten out this kink so that he can go about his business.”

“Hm. If Superintendent Hales doubted me when I pointed out Marston’s slippery alibi, he won’t be able to doubt me when I tell him that Marston lied to us,” DCI Aikman vowed and resolved to take the stairs two at a time.
